Ice pick scars: Ice pick scars are named so as they have a similar shape to what you would see if you attacked a piece of wood with an ice pick. They are quite deep or shallow with steep sides and quite jagged edges. Intense and severe cases of ice pick scars are often referred to as ‘depressed fibrotic scarring’. The most common place to find this type of scarring is around the cheeks and dimples.

Boxcar scars: This type of scarring is very similar in appearance to the type of scarring left behind by chicken pox. They have oval shaped depressions in the skin with sharp edges. The depth of these scars can vary. This type of scarring is around the cheeks and temples.

Rolling scars: Rolling scars can be one of the trickiest types to treat as they are a result of tissue damage beneath the actual skin. They have the appearance of a rolling hillside hence why they are given this name. Because the damage to cause these reactions are below the skin resurfacing treatments e.g. laser will not work for this type of scarring. This type of scar is found on the forehead and cheeks.

Hypertrophic scars: This type of scar is visible by small red bumps appearing in the damaged area. These can result from other types of wounds and not just acne and this type of scarring usually fades over time.
