What is Acne?When the pores in your skin become plugged, whether it is from pimples, whiteheads or blackheads, or more severely with nodules or lumps that form on your upper arms, chest, shoulders, face, back and even your neck, it is called acne. The disease is not restricted by age group as puberty suggests, but the highest instances are in youth who are becoming more mature because of the higher instance of oils and hormones in the skin. Individuals in America are impacted greatly by the way they are perceived in society, and while acne is not a fatal condition, the scarring can be disfiguring and it causes a lot of upset. The permanent scarring suffered by severe instances can dramatically alter an individual’s quality of life.

The most common word and the word that provides a multi-purpose description of physical changes in the skin associated with acne is lesion. A lesion can be internal or external and effects the liver such as in cirrhosis, or the skin in skin cancer, or a cut by a sharp object. When an individual suffers a change in their skin physically which is caused by a process of disease, specifically in the sebaceous follicle, it is acne. Blackheads and whiteheads are considered lesions and are also recognized by the name comedones. Cysts and nodules fall into this category as well.

There are many other words that are used to describe lesions, such as papule, nodule, pustule and cyst, and defining these words will help to identify the onset of acne and help identify treatments that will work better for that condition. These words can be confusing if you don’t have a point of reference, and because this disease is physical it can be very helpful to locate pictures that will provide a more detailed description of these lesions and their scarring on the internet.

When the sebaceous follicle becomes clogged with dead cells that originate form inside that follicle called sebum, bacteria or tiny hairs, it is called comedo or comedos acne. There are two types of comedos, open and closed, and they are known by different names as well depending on their appearance. An open comedos has a black plug inside the follicle and is called a blackhead. A closed comedo has a white appearance and is called a whitehead. Many people try to extract blackheads or pick whiteheads in order to get rid of them, but this should only be done by a dermatologist in an environment that will prevent the onset of staphylococci or streptococci bacteria which creates infection.
