Are Acne Scars Permanent?If you have acne scars then they can be a constant reminder of the hard times during your teenage years. Acne often strikes at a time when we are most vulnerable although in most cases it goes away after the age of 20 or so. However scars are often left behind in those who have a big problem with acne and these can be show up clearly even after the acne has gone. So are these scars permanent? And is there anything you can do about them?

First of all the scars are formed in the same way as other scars of the skin - when a wound heals but an excess of collagen is left behind. These scars won’t go away on their own unfortunately, but there are various treatments than can virtually remove them completely. The treatment type varies dependant on the type of scars you have and how severe they are, and your doctor will be able to advise you on the best treatment for you.

The best way to treat acne scars is to stop them in their tracks by reducing the swelling of your acne outbreaks before they can cause scars. This isn’t always possible but your dermatologist will be able to advise you on how to do it.

If you have scars already then this won’t help you, but there is the option of laser surgery as well as chemical peels that can vastly reduce the scars and leave you with a clearer skin on the face, neck and back.
